Internal Modes in High Temperature Plasmas.
Abstract
The linear stability of current-carrying toroidal plasmas is examined to determine the possibility of exciting global internal modes. The ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory provides a useful framework for the analysis of these modes, which involve a kinking of the central portion of the plasma column. Non-ideal effects are also important, and these are treated for high temperature regimes where the plasma is collisionless.
