New asymmetric modes of a nonlinear symmetric antiwaveguide
Abstract
The waveguide properties of a symmetric nonlinear layered structure comprising a linear layer surrounded by a nonlinear optically uniaxial medium are investigated analytically, supplementing the waveguide solutions of Akhmediev (1982) with antiwaveguide solutions to provide a complete description of the modes defined as nonsingular by Maradudin (1981). The mechanisms analyzed correspond to Kerr, Miller-force, or wave-field-ionization effects in nonlinear channeling systems, medium-filled waveguide structures, and plasma slabs with nonuniform carrier density. The applicability of the results to problems in radio engineering, microwave electronics, integrated optics, and nonlinear channeling is indicated.
