The unsteady motion of a circular cylinder in a two-layer liquid
Abstract
The plane internal waves generated at the interface in a two-layer liquid during the unsteady translational motion of a submerged circular cylinder are investigated analytically using the linear approach. To verify the analytical model proposed here, experiments were carried out in a 4.82x0.2x0.6-m trough filled with water and kerosene in which waves were generated by means of a 1.3-cm-radius cylinder. It is shown that the differences observed between the analytical and experimental data are due to the effect of viscosity which is neglected in the analytical treatment.
