Regular and chaotic behaviour of multimode gas lasers
Abstract
The buildup of the multimode gas laser spectra is analyzed on the basis of the full system of Lamb's (1964) equations of motion, and the results are compared with those of the phaseaveraged equations thar constitute the socalled freerunning approximation. It is found that the range of validity of the freerunning approximation is approximately given by r less than or approximately equal to 0.5, where r is the ratio of the homogeneous linewidth and the mode spacing (provided the former is mainly due to the decay of both the upper and the lower level). However, for r greater than or approximately equal to 2, the freerunning approximation, which generally predicts a steadystate spectrum to occur, breaks down. It is shown that in this case, multimode oscillation of a chaotic character takes place, and no steadystate regime is attained.
