Non-LTE calculations for CII in B-type stars.
Abstract
Non-LTE calculations have been carried out for the C II doublet series using the best available atomic data and including the effects of dielectronic recombination. Equivalent widths have been obtained for wavelength 4267, a close doublet, in main-sequence B-type stars and compared with high-dispersion observations taken from the literature. The adoption of the solar carbon abundance, 8.6 dex, results in overestimation of the equivalent widths by a factor of up to two. The observations are found to be consistent with a non-LTE calculation assuming a carbon abundance of less than 8.0 dex, significantly below the solar value. Suggestions are made for an improved calculation and additional population mechanisms are discussed.
