Laser Physics
Abstract
Consideration is given to several recent developments in laser physics concerning optical bistability and the transition to chaotic behavior of optical systems. Among the specific topics discussed are: the optical bistability of semiconductors, two-level atoms, and absorption resonance in atomic sodium; polarization switching and optical bistability; resonantly driven atoms in a ring cavity; and chaos in optical systems. Consideration is also given to experimental evidence for self-pulsing and chaos in CW-excited lasers; second harmonic generation in resonant cavities; the generation of tunable ultrashort light pulses; and Raman spectroscopy with ultrashort coherent excitation. Other topics discussed are: multiphoton ionization of atoms; pump dynamical effects in superfluorescent quantum initiation and pulse evolution; coherent population trapping and the effects of laser phase fluctuations; distribution functions in quantum optics; and several nondemolition measurements.
