Noise sources affecting the transmission of data with the aid of lightguides
Abstract
Advances in the areas of microelectronics and optical data transmission make it possible to implement optical digital wideband communication systems. The present investigation is concerned with the limits of the transmission capacity of the optical channel in connection with the current status of technology. These limits are determined by the noise sources of the optical channel. The characteristics of these noise sources are explored, and approaches for suppressing the noise are discussed. Attention is given to the occurrence of modal noise and its avoidance, problems of optical feedback, laser mode partition noise, modal mode partition noise, noise related to the direct modulation of the laser, and a stable optical transmission channel. A description is provided of possible development trends in optical transmission systems, taking into account the utilization of the proposed new transmission channel.
