High definition television (HDTV) - Compatibility and distribution
Abstract
An HDTV system semicompatible with present NTSC technology (SC-HDTV) is proposed. The essential requirement is an HDTV camera-line-scan rate equal to exactly twice that of NTSC. The HDTV signal and its long-haul transmission, the SC-HDTV signal for local distribution (on three CATV channels or via DBS), NTSC conversion, NTSC-signal reception by HDTV receivers, and HDTV transmission using time-companded differentials are discussed and illustrated with block diagrams and theoretical composite spectra. The development of some type of SC-HDTV is considered necessary if HDTV is to be implemented to improve color-TV quality.
