Low-phase-noise synthesisers for SHF Satcom
Abstract
The technical and economic effects of added phase noise in a satellite communication system are discussed. Factors which affect the phase-noise performance of oscillators, oscillator power supplies, and frequency multipliers are addressed, and a simple graphical method for analyzing phase-lock loop performance is described and applied to a loop incorporating both a mixer and frequency division. The method is applied to the phase-noise performance of an SHF synthesizer, giving reasonable agreement with measured results.
