Advances in optical fiber communications - An historical perspective
Abstract
Advances in the areas of fibers, cables, passive components, active devices, and systems are treated. It is noted that the unparalleled transmission properties of optical fibers, the broad versatility of fiber systems, and the impressive advances made in the area of devices and components are among the factors that have contributed to the rapid deployment of optical fiber technology. A table is included summarizing noteworthy events in optical fiber communications since 1960. Areas in research and development seen as holding particular promise are outlined. Optical fibers will be widely used to introduce wideband services such as high-speed and interactive video.
