Geomagnetic effect observed by the French-Danish cosmic ray instrument on HEAO-3 satellite.
Abstract
Predictions of the earth-shadow cone effect are confirmed (zenith angle between 70 and 110 deg, inclusively) using HEAO-3 satellite measurements at 12 locations in the -43 to +43-deg range of latitude and -180 to +180-deg range of longitude. The arrival directions of the full set of events are plotted in a polar dot diagram for a momentum range of 1.1 GeV/c/n and charge range of Z greater than or equal to 8. The mean cutoff rigidity predicted is compared to the calculated values; the agreement is within 10 to 15 percent. The shadow cone is oriented northeast in the Northern Hemisphere and southeast in the Southern Hemisphere. Around the equatorial regions the shadow cone is east oriented, with penetration at lower zenith up to 50-60 deg.
