X-ray study of the Crab Nebula and the Crab and VELA pulsars
Abstract
Einstein Observatory X-ray data on the Crab Nebula and the Crab and Vela pulsars, as well as the nebular structures surrounding the pulsars, are discussed. The Crab Nebula produced a 1000/sec counting rate in the imaging proportional counter, which had a capability of 125/sec. A 10 km radius was assumed for a 2,500,000 K neutron star as the Crab pulsar. The Vela pulsar exhibited a constant flux from a nonthermal source that also features a diffuse emission extended source. Further studies are under way to ascertain if the Crab pulsar has a shockwave shell.
