Révision du genre Palaelodus MILNE-EDWARDS, 1863 (Aves, Phoenicopteriformes) du gisement aquitanien de Saint-Gérand-le-Puy (Allier, France)
Abstract
A study of the five species of the genus Palaelodus, described from Saint-Gérand-le-Puy by A. Milne-Edwards (1863 and 1867-71) leads to retain only three species, P. ambiguus, P. gracilipes and P. crassipes which are redefined. The species P. minutus is synonymous with P. gracilipes. The largest species is transferred to the genus Megapaloelodus, previously known only from North America, and becomes M. goliath.
The particular morphology of the hind limb in the Palaelodidae suggests a diving adaptation of these birds.- Publication:
