Single-element rectangular microstrip antenna for dual-frequency operation
Abstract
A single-element rectangular microstrip antenna that can operate simultaneously for two different frequency bands is described. A rectangular patch antenna to be operated in the (0, 1) and (0, 3) modes is considered, since they both produce a radiation predominantly in the broadside direction, that is, normal to the patch, and with the same polarization. A table showing the effect that the number of pins (each 0.05 in diameter) has on the resonant frequencies is included. It is emphasized that the patch antenna described here is truly a single-element design, using only a single feed for both bands. In comparison with other antennas, it has the advantage that with regard to space, weight, thickness, and materials it is practically no different from an ordinary single-frequency patch.
