Informational performance criterion for a photon counter
Abstract
Exact expressions are obtained for the information transmission coefficient and information rate of a photon counter. It is proposed that the information rate be used as an information criterion for photon-counter performance. This information rate is defined as the product of communication entropy at the counter output and thfe inverse single-electron pulse length. An analysis is presented of the roles of the quantum yield of the photocathode, the noise level, and the duration of the single-electron pulse in the process of information transmission through the photon counter.
