Madley - Growth of a large earth station
Abstract
The Madley satellite ground station site near Hereford, UK, was developed in the late 1970s. From London, Madley was the nearest suitable interference-free location which could be found, although it is 150 miles from the capital. It is planned to provide at the site accommodations for six major terminals. Madley 1, the first terminal, became operational in 1978. Attention is given to the evolution of international satellite systems, Intelsat ground station standards, and details concerning Madley 1, Madley 1 extensions, Madley 2, and Madley 3. Operational and design details of the Madley terminals 4 and 5 are considered along with advances related to new technology.
