Numerical modelling of long-range transport of SO2 and SO4 above Europe
Abstract
A generalized numerical model for long-range transport of SO2 and SO4 above Europe is presented, taking into account the synoptic situation, planetary boundary layer effects and parameterization, as well as the transport problem in its most general form, under given boundary conditions. Results of model-based numerical experiments based on a previously studied synoptic situation are given, as are results for the surface distribution of SO2 and SO4 concentrations for the 6th and 24th hours of a model-based forecast, as well as the summary vertical flux of SO2 and SO4 in the soil. Besides a zonal pollution trend, a number of significant nonzonal deviations caused by the concrete synoptic situation are found.
