How the Reynolds equation is related to the Stokes equations
Abstract
The Reynolds equation, which gives the pressure distribution in a thin layer of lubricating fluid, is usually motivated in a rather heuristic way. An attempt is made to clarify how the Reynolds equation can be viewed as an asymptotic solution of the Stokes equations.
