An investigation of nonlinear absorption in Nd: phosphate glass
Abstract
A rigorous formula for calculating the nonlinear absorption coefficient from the laser energy transmissivity has been derived, emphasizing the role of the probe pulse shape. The input and output energy through a 2-cm diameter, 43.3 cm long Nd(3+) doped glass rod with a linear absorption coefficient of 0.0017/cm and a dopant concentration of 1.2 percent by weight were measured for different input laser power densities. The beam transmittance was determined as a function of the input power density. Equations and results for the influence of nonlinear absorption on the amplifier gain and on the pulse shape are presented and discussed.
