A model for the backflow mean velocity profile
Abstract
Simpson et al. (1981) and Shiloh et al. (1981) have conducted investigations in which detailed flow structure data were obtained with a laser anemometer for the near wall backflow region of a separating turbulent boundary layer. The present study has the objective to present simple model equations for the mean backflow near the wall which are consistent with experimental observations. These equations satisfy the current need for a near wall mean backflow model for use in calculation methods. A review of physical observations is provided, and a turbulent backflow mean velocity profile is presented. Since no adequate turbulence model for the backflow region is available currently, similarity, dimensional, and asymptotic behavior considerations are used to obtain a tentative backflow mean velocity profile model.
