An investigation of the heavily reddened young open cluster TR 27 on the Walraven photometric system.
Abstract
The light of many stars in Tr 27 is strongly attenuated by a foreground dark cloud. Employing UBV, RI and JHKLM data of 3 stars with known spectral types, the ratio of total to selective extinction of the foreground dark cloud was determined by means of the colour-difference method; the result is RJ = 3.2 ± 0.2, equivalent to RW = 3.3 ± 0.2 in the Walraven photometric system. The authors use this value and photometric data on the Walraven system for the determination of the distance of Tr 27 and obtain r = 1.65 ± 0.25 kpc. From the turn-off point of the cluster main sequence the age of the cluster is estimated to be ≡107 yr. The absolute magnitude of several interesting members of the cluster is discussed.
