Orbits as building blocks of a barred galaxy model
Abstract
The characteristics of the main families of periodic orbits are calculated for several sets of values of the parameters of a barred galaxy model which consists of a prolate heterogeneous bar in an axisymmetric background. Inside corotation, two main direct families are found of which the second, designated 'B' is aligned with the bar, as well as a retrograde family designated 'R'. Most quasi-periodic orbits, or regular motions, are trapped around either family B or family R. It is noted that more massive and/or more eccentric bars create more ergodicity, and the way in which this can affect the building of self-consistent bars is discussed. Outside corotation, analogs are found for the two main direct families, as well as a -1/1 resonant family. A nonnegligible amount of mass can be trapped around the -1/1 resonant family of periodic orbits outside the outer Lindblad resonance.
