Further statistics on the M/L ratios in earlytype galaxies.
Abstract
M/L ratios calculated from an extensive set of velocity dispersions in elliptical and lenticular galaxies, associated photometric data, and distance estimates, are found to significantly correlate with luminosities and UV and BV colors. Although classical techniques for the calculation of probable errors in regression parameters may be simplistic, the present empirical results for the slopes of the M/L color correlation are in striking disagreement with the theoretical estimate of Tinsley (1978), which predicts metallicityinduced changes of M/L and BV.
