Further statistics on the M/L ratios in early-type galaxies.
Abstract
M/L ratios calculated from an extensive set of velocity dispersions in elliptical and lenticular galaxies, associated photometric data, and distance estimates, are found to significantly correlate with luminosities and U-V and B-V colors. Although classical techniques for the calculation of probable errors in regression parameters may be simplistic, the present empirical results for the slopes of the M/L color correlation are in striking disagreement with the theoretical estimate of Tinsley (1978), which predicts metallicity-induced changes of M/L and B-V.
