Digital Signal Processing. Report of the Meeting of NSF Supported Principal Investigators
Abstract
Research efforts in six areas are summarized: (1) structures for digital signal processing; (2) (VLSI) in digital signal processing; (3) adaptive digital filtering; (4) multidimensional processing and spectral analysis; (5) two dimensional signal processing and image processing; and (6) compression and speech processing. Research directions and trends in signal processing are discussed. New digital signal processing applications are identified, including communications, consumer electronics, medicine, automated manufacturing, and aids fo the handicapped. The increasing importance of addressing algorithmic issues in close collaboration with applications is emphasized and the need for new metrics for evaluating signal processing is noted.
