Cross-hatching - An interaction between shock and turbulent boundary layer
Abstract
On the basis of experimental studies and analysis of the cross-hatching pattern, the present paper shows how the streamwise vortices, the turbulent boundary layer with ablation, and the external supersonic flow play an important role in the formation of the pattern. A flow model is proposed to explain the formation and development of the pattern. A correlation was obtained for some ablation materials between the wavelength of the cross-hatching and the pressure of the external supersonic flow and the recovering temperature of the boundary layer.
