Spacelab utilization in Europe - Present and future
Abstract
Progress in development and utilization of the Spacelab is described. Development began in 1974 and with continued support from ESA led to an order for a second unit after delivery of the first. Integration of all experiments modules has permitted full integrated systems tests before the modules are loaded for launch. A Spacelab pallet was launched on the second Shuttle mission and aided in demonstrating the Shuttle's capabilities as an operational space platform for scientific and applications research. Equipment used on Spacelab is sometimes tested in the West German Texus program, which involves use of a sounding rocket to provide temporary micro-g conditions and recovery. The Spacelab program has been expanded to developing free-flying long-duration experimentation pallets such as the Eureca.
