BS-2 spacecraft design
Abstract
Design features of the Japanese broadcasting satellite BS-2 are outlined. Intended for a 5 yr life, the satellite will carry sufficient fuel for a 4-yr on-station lifetime. Full station-keeping control will be maintained in the N-S and E-W directions. BS-2 has two FM color TV transmitters/receivers powered by solar panels delivering 0.9 kW at the end of life. The BS-2 will weigh 680 kg at lift-off. An S-band telemetry antenna will be mounted forward of the Ku-band broadcast antennas to minimize pattern interference. Downward transmissions will be at 2.3 GHz. Block diagrams are provided of the communications subsystem and the attitude control subsystems. Thermal control will be aided by optical solar reflector tiles.
