Visiting libration points in the earth-moon system using a lunar swingby
Abstract
This paper presents a new transfer technique which connects the parking orbit around the earth with one of the five libration points in the earth-moon system using a lunar swingby and three velocity impulses. The primary concern is focused on reducing the total amount of impulses, and to this end, the suitable swingby condition is selected as well as magnitudes of three velocity impulses. First, computations are carried out using a patched conics method, and the results are then checked by numerical integrations. Compared with Hohmann transfers, it is shown that the proposed transfers save approximately 10 percent of the total velocity increments and are several percent better than bielliptic transfers.
