On the importance of the Hipparcos stellar net for photographic catalog work
Abstract
The improvement in overall accuracy of ground based photographic catalogs, made possible by the error free reference points of the Hipparcos satellite, is discussed. Hipparcos data can be used to correct systematic errors in existing catalogs, and combined satellite-ground data can be used to construct the reference frame for a given epoch. Ground data, reduced using Hipparcos references, can provide proper motions for all stars down to magnitude 13, with mean error = 2 mas/yr. Data on several 100,000 stars are expected, allowing a global extragalactic reference frame to be established.
