Results from a new dual band, dual purpose radar for sea surface and aircraft search
Abstract
A prototype of the equipment considered in the present investigation has previously been described in detail by Williams (1981). The prototype was based on two separate inexpensive marine radars which had formerly been used in early dual frequency radar trials. Attention is given to details concerning the equipment, environmental diagrams, the performance of the radar against surface targets, balloon trials, and trial results on a twin engine turbo prop aircraft. It is concluded that the radar has fulfilled the aim of providing a high resolution surface mapping radar for shipboard navigation, while the air cover has been achieved in accordance with the theoretical forecasts.
