EUTELSAT - A satellite system for the '80s
Abstract
A historical overview the the Eutelsat program is presented, as it will use modern techniques and provide a variety of services. Eutelsat goals include the establishment of a European network of telecommunications satellites, equal access for all users, and compatibility with the use of the radio frequency spectrum and orbital space. Structure, function, and investors taking part in the organization, with France and the United Kingdom possessing the highest shares (16.40% each country), are outlined. Eutelsat will offer such services as trunk telephony, television distribution, and multiservices (data, text, pictures). The network consists of an ECS space segment with 12 transponders for telephony/television and 2 for multiservices, and a passband per transponder of 72 MHz. In addition, an F2 repeater will be used, with a satellite span of 13.8 m, an equinox power of 998 W, and an eclipse power of 792 W. Further development is anticipated in order to accommodate user needs.
