Studies and tests relative to separation and jettison of the Ariane 3 strap-on boosters
Abstract
Tests and modifications of the Ariane 3 launcher, capable of launching 2580 kg into transfer orbit, are presented. The tests set out to examine initial jettison conditions for the strap-on boosters, and the operation of the pyrotechnical separation chain. Testing methods included the use of a booster recovery device, the use of two identical cameras to observe the ejectors during separation, and the use of a device for remote sychronization and command. Test results lead to the following developments: increase in the capacity of the third stage from 8 tons of fuel to 10 tons, increase in chamber pressure and increase in specific impulse.
