Progress in the development of the European Large Telecommunication Satellite /L-SAT/
Abstract
The development of the European Large Telecommunication Satellite (L-SAT) commenced in December 1981. After a brief outline of the programme objectives and the satellite characteristics, the development plan is outlined and the current status of the main activities is given. Planning for the in-orbit utilisation of the four L-SAT 1 communications payloads is described. The paper concludes with a summary of recent work on four typical L-SAT derivatives adapted to a wide range of potential applications in the fields of direct-to-home television broadcast, communications with mobiles, regional fixed service telecommunications, and earth observations.
