General planning concepts for offshore satellite communications
Abstract
While satellite communications have been regularly employed by offshore platforms and vessels for several years, their promise of substantial improvements over radio communications from the viewpoints of cost and performance limits has not been fulfilled. Attention is presently given to the characteristics of the Marisat/Inmarsat, Intelsat, and Domsat systems, and emphasis is given to the difficulties they face, both from political constraints and the desired maximization of returns on a given investment.
