Activities report of the Division of Quantum Metrology
Abstract
The total radiation experiment in providing preliminary results of both the Stefan-Boltzmann constant and of thermodynamic temperature in the region 0-100 C was demonstrated. The temperatures obtained so far show considerable deviations from IPTS-68 in this important range and are broadly in agreement with results of recent gas thermometry. Redefinition of the practical temperature scale was made by measurements of the thermodynamic temperatures of the freezing points of silver and gold by photon-counting pyrometry. A mobile diode-laser system for long-path atmospheric monitoring was developed. Continuous monitoring for several hours is possible with these very stable lasers and concentrations of CO in air as low as 5 parts per billion can be detected. In the environmental field, a package of six instruments was successfully flown by balloon to measure stratospheric trace gases in a collaborative exercise.
