Asymptotic solutions of the convective diffusion equation
Abstract
The present investigation is concerned with analytic and quasi-analytic solutions of the convection diffusion equation, taking into account problems of fluid flow, mass transfer, and heat transfer. Attention is given to external flows over a sphere and a wall, internal flow in a cylindrical pipe, nondimensional numbers describing the relative importance of diffusion and convection, and the case of convection dominated transfer. It is pointed out that material transport by convection and diffusion is analogous to the transport of heat but differs in the magnitude of the equivalent Peclet number. Mass transfer at high Peclet number is considered along with the heat transfer in pipe flow.
