Optics and resonator design issues for high-power free electron lasers
Abstract
The saturation flux in the variable parameter free electron lasers is very high and the designs for resonators and optics of high power FELs powered by electron beams from RF accelerators are constrained by the high flux small diameter gain regions and by mirror damage limits. These further dictate the resonator lengths and FEL start-up time. The FEL micropulse and macropulse damages are discussed. Configurations which reduce resonators to manageable size are outlined.
