Noise in diode lasers
Abstract
The performance characteristics of seven GaAsAl solid state single-mode lasers as fiber optic light sources were assessed with regard to losses in sensor sensitivity dependent on the coherence length, amplitude noise and phase noise. Channel substrate planar (CSP), buried heterostructure, transverse junction stripe (TJS) and proton bombarded buried heterostructure lasers were tested. All the lasers displayed coherence lengths of over 1 m and were therefore suitable for interferometric systems. Sufficiently low noise levels were observed for the devices to be used in fiber optic gyroscope applications.
