ASTROPLANE - A working group of the European Science Foundation
Abstract
In 1981, a working group has been established to study need and feasibility with respect to an airborne observatory devoted mainly to observations in the infrared and submillimeter wavelength regions. Conclusions reached by the working group at the last meeting (February 12, 1982) are discussed. In connection with one of the proposals considered, an infrared and submillimetric telescope is to be placed on board of the Airbus A 300-B2. The recommendations of the European Foundation are presented. Attention is given to the great scientific potential of the 10 octaves of the electromagnetic spectrum between 1 and 1000 microns, which, apart from several atmospheric windows, can be investigated only from above the tropopause.
