Oscillatory convection in sunspots
Abstract
Two types of oscillatory convection possible in a conducting plasma in the presence of a magnetic field are examined. It is suggested that combined oscillatory convection must exist in sunspots. In the strong-field region this convection is similar to the low-frequency convection discovered by Sirovatskii and Zhugzhda (1967). In lower layers where the field is weaker, this convection is similar to the overstability described by Chandrasekhar (1961).
