Effective-width model for evacuation flow
Abstract
A formula for determining the egress capacity of stairwells, the Effective Width Model, is described. The effective-width model for evacuation flow is derived from an empirical data base developed from evacuation drills where exit stairs were intensively used by crowds of evacuees; additional data came from detailed observations in large public-assembly facilities where the normal movement of people was observed using film and video recording techniques.
