High-efficiency commercial water heater development
Abstract
An engineering model of a condensing commercial water heater was designed, fabricated and tested. The selected conept consists of a high-efficiency water heater connected by appropriate plumbing to a stratified-temperature storage tank. A relatively simple method of promoting stratification has been devised and tested. Preliminary corrosion resistance tests have been conducted with seven candidate materials for the condensing portions of the system. The overall performance of the system has been measured for parametric variations in operating conditions. Recovery efficiencies in excess of 90% and standby-loss rates as low as 0.7%/hr have been demonstrated with the engineering model. On the basis of the test results, it is projected that the system will achieve service efficiencies of 85-87% under actual usage conditions.
