Application of Spacelab hardware and know how to future space programs
Abstract
Basic operational capabilities of Spacelab are presented, indicating that it is versatile, maintainable, and reusable. These three characteristics of Spacelab are the basis for studies of modifications and possibilities intended to satisfy future scientific needs. The first phase of these studies proposes structural and functional improvements such as mission duration extension, an increase in electric power available, and increased operational flexibility. A second, more long-term phase of improvement and modernization of Spacelab indicates a particular need for automated or manned space service systems. Structural design diagrams of both phases are included.
