Error handling techniques based on channel coding, for satellite communication systems
Abstract
Channel coding schemes which can be applied for error control on satellite communication links were investigated. Characteristics and performance of coding techniques are investigated, with respect to error probabilities, complexity, data rates, and necessary bandwidth. To enable a performance comparison of different codes, an approximation for the bit error probability of block codes was derived, with the advantage that codes with different parameters can be treated equally. In many cases more accurate results can be obtained. An error rate reduction computation method is presented. Representative coding curves are evaluated. Optimum applications of error control techniques in various transmission systems are presented. It is shown that techniques exist for almost any kind of transmission channel, which achieve significant improvements in the system performance, even for very different channel parameters.
