Ionic treatment of tools and gears
Abstract
Ionic nitriding was studied. The diffusion layers were quantitatively and microstructurally analyzed. The fundamental mechanisms which govern the in situ transformation of sulfur carbides into nitrides and lead to the precipitation of cementite lattices are defined. Optimization of the treatment parameters allows for the realization of single phase layers on Z 155 CDV 12 steel. This phase transformation conditions the mechanical resistance of the nitrided layers. Wear test results indicate that for tool steels, the choice of nitriding treatment must be specific to the intended application.
