Evaluation of polymers for transformer applications
Abstract
Aging studies were performed on polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate, polyparabanic acid, polyethersulfone, and polyimide at 70, 110, 135, and 1600C for times to 4000 h. Several types of tests were run on the aged materials to evaluate changes in mechanical and electrical properties. Polycarbonate showed evidence of degradation after aging at 1100C and higher temperatures, polyethylene terephthalate began to degrade at 1350C, and the other three polymers withstood 1600C without detectable deterioration.
