Sensitivity of IFM and crystal video receivers with preamplification
Abstract
A method for sensitivity determination of a receiver consisting of a broadband amplifier, a square law detector, and a video amplifier is described. The necessary signal to noise ratio ahead of the detector is calculated according to the desired values for the detection probability, false alarm hazard, and the broadband ratios ahead and after the detector. The sensitivity is determined in the usual way using values for losses, noise factor, and bandwidth ahead of the detector. The corresponding graphs are presented. The necessary amplification before detection is discussed and the combined sensitivity for antenna and receiver together is indicated in dBm/mcsq and dBmi.
