Application of satellite-based sidelooking radar in maritime surveillance
Abstract
A satellite borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system for maritime surveillance is investigated. The system is analyzed, and algorithms for digital processing of SAR images from the raw data are developed. These algorithms are implemented on a general purpose computer and applied to data from SEASAT-1. An autofocusing algorithm for the azimuth compression is developed whereby SAR images can be processed without any additional information on satellite orbit and attitude. This makes operational use of satellite borne SAR feasible. A method for target detection from SAR images is also developed.
