Satellite communication and television
Abstract
The development of specialized satellites and the services which this equipment makes available are surveyed. Communication satellite systems, such as Intelsat, ECS, and TDRSS, are covered. Present and future satellite services are listed. Development of INTELSAT services is stressed. European communication satellites are described. Satellite development trends are pointed out. Satellite subsystem technology is treated. The tradeoff between lifetime, ruggedness, and cost is evaluated. Geostationary platforms are considered. The fundamentals of satellite television are layed out. The TV-SAT/TDF1 project is outlined. Future developments in European satellite television are mentioned.
