Recommendations for a standard electronic mail system to be used by space agencies in the development of cross-supported space data systems
Abstract
Basic recommendations for a standardized electronic mail service are proposed. Within the scope of the Consultative Committee on Space Data Systems, an electronic mail service standard is an important objective to be adopted as a common tool in the development of cross-support concepts for space data systems. The proposed recommendations are based on currently used computer systems. Different classes and means of information exchange are considered. Basic specifications are given for input/output compatibilization. Concepts to be used in report segmentation, coding and storage are proposed, based on a well structured file organization. A basic protocol for online data communication is also proposed. Considerations on cost effectiveness of onand offline data transport are made. Needs for further developments are pointed out.
